The video instruction is given by John Mendez, qualified RYA tutor, who takes us through each aspect of the training at a very measured and easily accessible pace: perfect for beginners to follow. Part 1 covers the Safety Briefing; life jackets, location of flares and basic introduction to using the vhf radio.

Yachtmaster Training Part 2
Part 2 covers how to skipper a boat in and out of a port. It features step by step instructions of how to plot your course and use charts to help prepare a pilotage plan.

Yachtmaster Training Part 3
Part 3 covers basic boat handling concentrating on the various ways of picking up a mooring buoy, and basic instruction for turning the boat on the spot.

[ Armel Le Cléac’h (Brit Air) winner of La Solitaire 2010 :“ I’m really proud. I can’t believe it, I won three legs a sixth place in Ireland… Winning the Figaro like this it’s pure joy. I came to take my revenge for last year’s bad performance, I wanted to sail well on all the four legs. I was into the match and I somehow knew I could make it. I feel I have learnt something on how to control the race, to be in the lead. It’s hard when you have 44 adversaries behind you, and all good ones! I managed to get in the lead, stay there and win, on all the legs bar one. Cool! I felt terrific onboard, the boat, the strategy all came easier than I thought. I enjoyed every moment, even here at the raz Blanchard, Corentin (Douguet ed. note) was not far but I wanted to get to the end and win this Figaro.
Just one year ago things were quite different, I think I’ve grown up… I trained well and my shore team did a fantastic job. It’s been a long time since I won an important race, this year it’s been the Transat AG2R and the Solitaire.
I will probably be feeling the exhaustion soon. I’m exhilarated by many things, I’ve been thinking a lot before the finish. My victory in 2003, the work done during winter, the sailing in bad weather, when its’ cold. But you have to be well trained and ready… I need to make a break now, I’ve pushed hard and we had a bit of every condition: strong breeze, light air and it’s tiring, haven’t slept much… " ]

[" On Wednesday 18th August at 21.15.24, Armel Le Cléac’h crossed the finish line of Leg 4 placed in the Bay of Cherbourg. It took to Brit Air’s 54 hours, 30 minutes and 24 seconds to cover the 435 miles of the last lap at an average speed of 7.98 knots. This summer le Cleac’h proved to be the man of all records. At 33 years of age he wins this 41st edition after having heavily dominated the race (with 3 leg wins) and enters the very selected club of double winners, thanks to his first victory back in 2003. Le Cleac’h was followed shortly on the line by Corentin Douguet on E.Leclerc Mobile and by François Gabart who thus secured second place overall."]

["Under a grey sky the 44 skippers taking part in La Solitaire du Figaro, left Kinsale for the fourth and decisive leg. Tension was high and the Committee was forced to give two general recalls. Swiss Bernard Stamm (Cheminée Poujoulat) and French Matthieu Girolet (Entreprendre) were involved in a collision and suffered from serious damages to their boats. Both decided to abandon racing. Excellent start for, young Portuguese Francisco Lobato and Italian Pietro D’Alì. Weather conditions are expected to be fairly tough, for a fast 435 miles passage to the finish in Cherbourg."]

[" Wednesday 11th August at 20 hours, 8 minutes and 45 seconds, Adrien Hardy crossed the finish line first of the third stage of La Solitaire du Figaro. It took to the young Agir Recouvrement skipper on 2 days, 6 hours, 8 minutes and 45 seconds to cover the 349 mile from Brest to Kinsale at an average speed of 6.45 knots. The 26 year-old sailor reached the finish line ahead of Yann Eliès, whom he fought nail an tooth over the final 45 miles to beat at the finish. Generali-Europ Assistance’s skipper crossed a mere 1 minute and 17 seconds behind Hardy, while Jean-Pierre Nicol on Bernard Controls closed in third. A fierce battle for the first place in the newcomers’ special category: only five seconds separate Frenchman Anthony Marchand from Portuguese Francisco Lobato!

What a breathtaking finale! Ireland did its best to welcome the Solitaire heroes: a charming sunset light on the Irish green coastline, blue skies and a gentle breeze. A well-organised party to celebrate Adrien Hardy’s first win... The young sailor, 26 years, who is participating for the third time to the Solitaire du Figaro proved consistent and determined from the very start, always remaining in the top five positions. Hardy took the lead towards the end of the long Celtic Sea crossing, just before the Fastnet Roc as a result of taking a northern option. Under the constant threat of Yann Eliès, Hardy kept the situation under control over the final 45 miles. Spinnaker up, close to the cliffs he managed to keep a small, yet decisive, lead over Generali-Europ Assistance’s expert skipper. The Irish podium in Kinsale celebrates another young solo sailor, Jean-Pierre Nicol (Bernard Controls), 31 years, who reaches his best ever performance in the race after four participations.

5 tiny seconds! That's the amazing gap between the first two "rookies", the newcomers to the Solitaire du Figaro, who compete for the special Bénéteau ranking. French sailor Anthony Marchand, 25 yearold and from Finistère, on Espoir Région Bretagne snatched first place from Portugal’s Francisco Lobato, 25 years old from Lisbon on ROFF/TEMPO-TEAM. The two promising solo sailors finished in 8th and 9th position respectively leaving behind them several older and much more experienced skippers. Amazingly, it took just one hour and a half for the 44 Figaro II boats to cross the line in quick succession after three days at sea.

From the Minitransat to the Figaro, what next? Winner Adrien Hardy is also known as Mac Gyver, a nickname a French journalist gave him when, during the 2007 Mini Transat he dismasted, managed to repair his rig and go back racing. He is 26 years old, he was not even born when Jean-Paul Mouren (M@rseillentreprises) who is at his 24 participation, sailed into Kinsale for the first time! He must be even happier because he joins in on the 41 year history the Figaro has with the sailing harbour of Kinsale. Hardy joins sailig legends in his achievement: Alain Gautier (four victories!), Jean Le Cam, Yves Parlier, Loïck Peyron, Philippe Poupon… among others.

Apart from Francisco Lobato, other non French skippers had “mixed” performances: Isabelle Joschke (Synergie) finished 21st, Bernard Stamm (Cheminées Poujoulat) 25th while more disappointed were Italian Pietro D’Alì, who suffered also from some technical issues and closed in 36th and Briton Jonny Malbon, 41st."]

"The 44 skippers taking part to Leg 3 of the Solitaire du Figaro left Brest today for a 349 miles long route bound for Kinsale. The start was hampered by the bulk of the fleet clustering the pin end of the line, causing individual recalls and several protest flags to be raised. Leaving the goulet de Brest prove to be as hard as expected with collisions, penalty turns and a boat actually hitting the rocks. Portuguese skipper, Francisco Lobato, rounded the Radio France mark in 5th position ahead of his fellow first time participants."

"On the penultimate day of the Extreme Sailing Series at Cowes Week, the pace was fast and furious. After a light wind first afternoon race in 8 knots, the wind accelerated to 15-18 knots and the Extreme 40s were off -- power reaching at speeds of 20-25 knots. It was fast, it was wet and hugely physical for the crews as they pushed hard, playing a balancing act on a high wire. It was potential capsize conditions - the windward hulls flying insanely, leeward bows digging into the waves -- misjudge the situation and it would be game over. The fifth man guests were having the ride of their lives and the spectators were loving it..."

["Sun, warm weather and light wind are all just a memory for the 45 skippers participating to the 41st Solitaire du Figaro. The fleet crossed the high pressure ridge fairly early and is now preparing for the second night at sea, on their plate strong breeze, autumnal weather and rain. SN1 mark could be rounded soon
.The worries of crossing the high pressure ridge are only a memory for the skippers who left Gijon to Brest for the 385 long second leg. The fleet is well spread out over a 17 miles large area and the coming hours will be crucial to judge whether the best option was East, West or centre, that is to say the shortest one to the target. By now the more easterly route seems to have paid off but it will not be until the SN1 mark that the games will be revealed. All the boats are keeping impressive average speeds and the mix of good strategy, physical strength and good manoeuvring will make a difference.
“It could well be that the leaders will round the mark around 10 p.m.” said Race Director Jacques Caraës “It’s going to be a fairly exerting night and I advised all the skipper to wear their lifejackets, personal Epirb and a flash light at night. Just to remind them, you know.”
As far as the ranking is concerned the leader at the latest position report (at 16hrs) was Jèrémie Beyou (BPI) who has a little more than 3 miles advantage on second placed François Gabart (Skipper Macif 2010), third is the well experienced Kito de Pavant (Groupe Bel) while the winner of the first leg and leader of the general scoreboard Armel Le Cléa’ch (Brit Air) is fourth at 3,9 miles. Italian Pietro D’Alì seems to have found the right feeling with his Figaro II and is fifth at 4.5 miles behind Beyou."]

["At precisely 01:42:32 Armel Le Cléac’h on Brit Air crossed the finish line two miles outside the port of Gijon, on the Spanish Coast after 83 hours, 14 minutes and 32 seconds. He covered the 515 miles from Le Havre to Gijón at an average speed of 6.9 knots. Brit Air’s skipper has participated nine times to the Solitaire and scored three leg wins.
Le Cléac’h has sailed the perfect race right from the very start and never been less than top five, moving into the lead just after passing the Brittany Point on Thursday at dawn, only temporarily conceding the first place to François Gabart (now lying in fourth) and to the rookie Yoann Richomme. His victory was built in the Bay of Biscay when he skilfully opted for a more easterly route escaping the high-pressure ridge area.

“I have come back to the Figaro to try and get revenge on last year,” declared Armel Le Cléac’h before the start in Le Havre. He is nicknamed the “jackal” for his both his guile and relentless perseverance right up to the end. Proven once again in Gijón.

Winner in 2003, where he beat Alain Gautier by the memorable 13 seconds, Armel Le Cléac’h is 33 years old and for some time now has been a point of reference on the Figaro circuit. Over the past two years he has enjoyed success in both the Open 60 and Figaro campaigns: 2nd in the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe, 2008 Imoca World Champin and then winner last year of the Transat AG2R-La Mondiale."]

The regular eight boat fleet entered into the 2010 circuit has been augmented by top French sailor Roland Jourdain, who has joined the UK event with his team Veolia Environnement. Jourdain, a two times IMOCA World Champion, hasn’t raced on multihulls since he won the Formula 40 World Championship in 1989, the boat made famous by another James Bond actor, Pierce Brosnan, in the Thomas Crowne Affair.

Yann Guichard, skipper of Groupe Edmond de Rothschild, leading after the first event in Sete at the end of May, is looking forward to the only UK stopover on the five-event circuit. “It has been almost two months between the first event in Sète at the end of May and this second round: we can’t wait to compete again. The race schedule set by OC Events is all encompassing, with a long race in the morning and shorter classic races in the afternoon: adaptability and concentration will be key.

“Cowes, on the Isle of Wight is a beautiful place and we have the chance to race during Cowes Week mixing our state of the art catamarans with thousands of different boats. An amazing show on the water every day!”

It won’t just be the show on the water that will bring down the crowds to the Extreme Sailing Series at Cowes Week from 31 July – 5 August. BBC Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank will be a fitting finale to a week’s worth of on-shore entertainment by the cream of the Isle of Wight’s DJ scene, under organizers OC Events’ new label, Sailing Rocks™. We have the new long course race in the morning and then the shorter course racing in the afternoon. Added to this we’re sailing for 7 days rather than the usual 4, I’m sure fitness is going to be key and making sure you don’t burn out too soon. It will be a balance between pushing hard and being consistent in the water. We’re now back on the water in the Solent putting in some training ahead of the big event. We were happy with our performance in Sete but we will definitely be looking for a spot the podium at our home event!”

La Solitaire du Figaro began yesterday from Le Havre in Northern Normandy. The 45 sailors began the first leg, 515 miles to Gijón, in Spain. La Solitaire, as the name suggests is the premier solo sailing event of the summer. Many well known names of French sailing, including Gilles Gahinet, Philippe Poupon, Yves Parlier, Jean Le Cam, Michel Desjoyeaux, Frank Cammas, Kito De Pavant, Jeremie Beyou, Pascal Bidegorry and Nicholas Troussel having won this race in previous years. This year, as in previous races, there are rookies and professionals competing against each other in this true test of single handed sailing.

The race began yesterday on the first of a four stage race over the course of the next four weeks.The video animation of the course, above, demonstrates the rather complicated route of 1717 miles around the French, Spanish and Irish coastline.

	Quantum Racing (USA) emerged as overall leaders of the Camper Regatta – Conde de Godó Trophy – Barcelona after opening with two fifth places and a second on what proved an especially testing first day of racing as the Audi MedCup Circuit competes for the first time ever off the Catalan capital. As an introduction to a new venue nothing was gained easily in the moderate 9-13 knots NE'ly breezes. With the start line set directly in front of where the Olympic village was for the 1992 Olympic Games, relatively close to the shore, there was an awkward choppy sea kicked back off the beach to contend with. The variable cloud cover moved the wind around from time to time, the breeze varied in strength across the course and the racing for the most part was extremely close with small errors punished heavily in the intense competition. The Quantum Racing team came back to the dock at the city’s Moll de la Fusta, greeted by huge crowds. [ In 2009 thousands gathered along the shoreline in Cowes, Isle of Wight, to watch the Extreme 40s in close quarter combat. The racing, easy to understand for both the sailors and non-sailors alike, was intense and spectacular, with the teams cheered on as they crossed within inches of each other and the beach.
The Extreme Sailing Series returns to Cowes again for the fourth consecutive year and for 2010 will host more days of racing than ever before. The fleet will be put through its paces over six days, with a mixture of the short, sharp courses the circuit has become renowned for, as well as longer 'classical' Cowes Week type races, stretching the legs of the dynamic Extreme 40 catamarans and the tenacity of their crews.
Event organiser OC Events is passionate about making top level professional sailing, also entertaining for both sailing and non-sailor audiences. Once again the Extreme Sailing Series Race Village at Egypt Point will have a mix of high-end corporate hospitality, along with bars and food outlets for the general public and in the evening DJs. "We aim to entertain both on and off the water at every event," commented Gilles Chiorri, Event Director for OC Events. "The visitors last year were fantastic in their support of the teams and were very vocal in their enjoyment of the racing. We look forward to putting on another great show this year."
Friday 30 July will see the only UK leg of the circuit kick off with an exclusive media day, reserved for the visiting national and international media. The non-point scoring racing will give the teams the opportunity to assess each other's improvements in performance and teamwork over the 8 weeks since the opening event in Sète at the end of May.
Every morning from Saturday 31 July to Thursday 5 August inclusive (except for Tuesday 3 August) there will be a long distance morning race, starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron line. Lasting up to 1 hour, the longer races will pitch the teams' boat speed head-to-head on relatively open water.
The short course racing will take place at Egypt Point every afternoon. For the first three days from 3pm and for the final three, the entertainment will begin from 4pm with racing from 5pm, to ensure as many of the Cowes Week competitors can enjoy the top flight action, after the waters are largely clear of the Cowes Week racing yachts.
Nine teams are anticipated to be on the start line in Cowes including current Series leader Yann Guichard and his men on Groupe Edmond de Rothschild, defending Series Champions, Oman Sail Masirah led by Mr Multihull himself Loick Peyron, double Olympic Gold Medallist Roman Hagara with Red Bull Extreme Sailing and local hero Mike Golding with Ecover Sailing Team. A new entry joining the line-up in Cowes will be announced shortly.
Mike Golding, skipper of Ecover Sailing Team commented, "It is always nice to be sailing in familiar waters, in front of a home crowd, but that also comes with additional pressures. We had a good result in Sete and we are hoping to reach the podium for the Cowes event. It will be interesting to see the teams' performances on the longer races - I'm sure boat handling will be crucial, as will the communication onboard. It's a long race compared to the short sharp 20 minute racing we are used to, I'm sure concentration will also be key to success on the water. The Island is famous for its tidal currents, and I'm hoping local knowledge will help us gain a bit of an advantage over some of the other teams in that area."
Four Extreme 40s will take part in this weekend's J.P.Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race: Ecover, Team GAC Pindar and The Wave, Muscat as well as defending line honours champions, Oman Sail Masirah.
Golding commented on this weekend's marathon. "This will be the first time we have raced as a team for more than 20 minutes at a time so I'm sure its going to be testing out there, hopefully we'll have some good conditions and be back in time for breakfast!"

["A spectacular welcome greeted the crews of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race as they arrived back in Hull at the end of their 35,000-mile circumnavigation. For the non-professional crew onboard the ten ocean racing yachts, the return to Hull Marina marks the end of a challenge of a lifetime as they battled the elements in search of victory and the title of Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race champions.Tens of thousands of people lined the banks of the Humber and the quayside of Hull Marina to welcome home the crews after a gruelling ten-month challenge that has seen them take on the world’s largest and most formidable oceans, endured violent storms and frustrating calms, extreme heat and bone-numbing cold, unstintingly come to the aid of their fellow competitors in times of need and, all the while, raced ferociously to win.

Crossing the finish line overnight at the end of the 14th and final stage of the Clipper 09-10 Race, the Irish entry, Cork, claimed the maximum ten points for securing their second first place of their campaign. It is an achievement made all the more remarkable by the fact the team’s original yacht ran aground on a reef in the Java Sea in January.

Cork’s victory in Race 14 denied Hull & Humber their much coveted home port win but their second place finish did allow the ‘big orange boat’ to leapfrog Jamaica Lightning Bolt in the final standings to finish fourth overall. Again, a remarkable achievement for the team whose original skipper, Piers Dudin, was med-evac’d by the Japanese Coastguard in the North Pacific after his leg was broken when a huge wave washed him across the deck. Piers joined Justin Taylor, who took over as skipper, and the rest of the Hull & Humber crew on stage to great cheers and applause from the crowds.

Clipper 09-10 champions, Spirit of Australia, finished third in the final stage of the 14-race challenge, minutes ahead of Cape Breton Island, whose performance guaranteed them a place on the final podium. The Canadian team finish third overall, just 1.3 points behind Team Finland.

The ten yachts raced up the Humber in the presentational John Harrison Race, commemorating the man who, in the 18th Century, revolutionised the age of sail by inventing the marine chronometer, a device enabling sailors to accurately plot their longitudinal position. Hull & Humber wowed the crowds with a win while Spirit of Australia flew their spinnaker to the delight of the tens of thousands of spectators.

Brendan Hall, skipper of the victorious Spirit of Australia team, said, “Finishing in first place feels unbelievable. That was the seminal moment of my sailing career. All the hard work over the past two years and all the hard work of the team over the past ten months is finally recognised in public by everybody. A big thanks to our fantastic peers on the other boats, the people of the City of Hull and all our loved ones here on the pontoon. It’s absolutely fantastic and one of the best moments of my life!”

The warmth of the welcome the home team received was overwhelming, according to Hull & Humber’s skipper, Justin Taylor. “It’s a great feeling. I can’t believe it, all these people… it’s phenomenal. I’m a little bit overcome with emotion; I don’t really know what to make of it, to be honest,” he said.

“The crew accepted me and they really pulled together and showed some real grit and I think that’s reflected in the results that they achieved after I took over. It’s down to them really – I gave them a bit of encouragement and they did the rest. The crew are elated. It’s wonderful to be back and I think they’re feeling the same way, a bit overcome by the reception we’ve received here.”

The Parachute Regiment’s Freefall Display Team, the Red Devils, dropped in as the yachts finished the John Harrison Race and once the yachts had entered the marina the Royal Navy’s helicopter display team, the Black Cats, showed their flying prowess.

On stage the teams were called up one by one to be saluted by their supporters, California, in tenth were first up, followed by Edinburgh Inspiring Capital, Cork, Qingdao, Uniquely Singapore and Jamaica Lightning Bolt in fifth place.

Each Clipper yacht is entered by a city, region or country and sponsors use the event to showcase themselves to the world.

Terry Hodgkinson Chairman of Yorkshire Forward which sponsors Hull & Humber and is responsible for bringing the Clipper Race to the Humber, said, “We’re here to celebrate these crews’ achievements and celebrate this wonderful city and the wider region. They’ve all done a fantastic job of getting the boats back safely. Clipper has done a wonderful job raising the profile of this area both nationally and internationally and bringing visitors to this fantastic region.”

Clipper Race founder and chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail solo non-stop around the world, said, “We have had fantastic support from the people of this region for this race. I’d like to mention Yorkshire Forward, Welcome to Yorkshire and of course the people of the City of Hull. It’s been fantastic, the way you’ve supported this race right from the start has been heart warming and we’re very grateful to you.”

Sir Robin had a message for the crews waiting next to the stage. He said, “You’ve achieved your ambition. You have sailed the oceans of the world, you have seen more of the sea than most people do and you have come through it all. You’ve come back very experienced sailors and you’ve achieved something very special in your lives and I’m very, very proud of you.

“I hope you go off now and continue sailing, take some of what you’ve learned the way you work as a team, back into your lives. Do you remember what I said at the beginning? I want to hear you say, ‘That’s the best thing I’ve done with my life’ – and then I want to hear you say, ‘So far,’ because then I know we have widened your horizons.”

Doctors, students, teachers, lawyers, engineers and a taxi driver are among the crew members who have succeeded in their challenge. On board each of the ten internationally-backed yachts is just one professional, the skipper, whose role it is to lead the team to victory. The crew members were all amateurs, nearly forty percent of whom had no sailing experience when they embarked on their Clipper Training, before setting off on this adventure ten months ago.

For every crew member this final race is a poignant moment. Sailing around the world is a considerable achievement – more people have climbed Mount Everest than have raced yachts around the world. The fleet’s arrival in Hull Marina this afternoon is the climax of this once in a lifetime adventure.

To date more than 2,000 people have become ocean racers by taking part in the Clipper Race and, of these, more than 300 have achieved the rare accolade of becoming a circumnavigator by racing around the world under sail. Eighty-two new circumnavigators have joined the ranks of this exclusive club following the fleet’s arrival in Hull."]

"After Solo took line honours at 13:07:02, she was quickly followed by Sungard (Marco Nannini & Paul Pegs) – 13:20:33, Fujifilm (Alex Bennet & Malcolm Dickinson) – 13:24:37, Phesheya Racing (Nick Leggatt & Pip Hutton-Squire) – 13:33:59 and Roaring Again (Hans Plas & Robin Verhoef) – 13:44:43. Less than 38 minutes separated the first five yachts after 2000 miles of testing conditions."

The last leg from Lowestoft to Plymouth will be very close and it's still possible that Alex and Malcolm might catch Sungard. The racing in the Class 40 fleet was excitingly close as the class leaders approached Lerwick. Fujifilm had raced in to the lead with fast downwind sailing from St.Kilda to Muckle Flagga, over taking both Phesheya Racing and Marco Nannini's yacht, Sungard. Fujifilm held on to her lead down the east coast of the Shetland Isles, but light air unfortunately caught Fujifilm just a few miles from the finish, and Sungard over took them and won the 3rd leg. Congratulations Marco & Paul!

We've posted 2 video clips, from BennettOceanRacing, of Alex Bennett and Malcolm Dickinson battling through the unpredictable and ever changing weather, from extremely heavy winds to no wind at all. Great drama and excitement is all part of the challenge of this race. Interesting film and commentary from Alex. Keep up the great work!

"SunGard Front Arena vs Phesheya Racing, the battle is on

We set off just over fours ago for the third leg of the Round Britain
and Ireland race, we are currently leading first overall, and will have
the challenging taskl of trying to keep ahead, with a challenging
weather forecast ahead, winds will die down to nothing later tonight
before swinging 180 degrees and filling in for was we expect to be an
awesome trilling spinnaker run to Lerwick in the Shetlands some 450
miles away, but first we have to got through the light wind band and
chase the new wind coming from the west.
When we woke up at 2 am a freezing northerly wind was blasting over
Castle Bay at 25 kts, with sleepy eyes we made our way to the start line
with the difficult call of whether to fly a spinnaker towards Barra
head.
The wind eased off a bit just before the start so we popped the
fractional kite and did a very decent, on-time crossing of the line...
the wind was anyhow gusty and it got quite exiciting on the way down,
speeds in excess of 14 knots, several narrowly avoided broaches (that's
when you lose control of the boat in strong winds and you are flattened
on one side in a mess of flapping sails)... Then hit by a gust we wiped
out, got things under control and decided to drop the kite to avoid any
damage and use mainsail and headsail to the headland... Meanwhile
Phesheya was tracking behind at great speeds, they saw us dropping the
kite but hung on, the wind actually eased off and they clearly were
better off with the kite up and by Barra head they had almost caught us
up... by the headland however we were ready to harden up towards St
Kilda and by the time they took the spinnaker down and hoisted their
headsail we had put again some space between us.
Now we are beating to windward to St Kilda, we are tracking along at
almost identical speeds and there's never more than a few hundred yards
between us and Phesheya, amazing! Although truth be told i think they
are catching up...
The wind is progressively expected to decrese as we beat towards St
Kilda then we'll have to face the ridge of light airs... Positions in
the fleet can greatly change in light winds so it will be certainly one
leg to follow!
The rest of the Class 40s started between 2.5 and 3.5 hours behind, the
margin we had gained on them in the second leg.

[ "The objective of the Class is to develop a high level and entertaining racing program and to keep the absolute one design aspect of the RC44 by ensuring that all boats are as identical as possible in terms of construction, shape of hull and appendages, weight and weight distribution, deck layout and equipment, sail plan and performance.

“We wanted to include a degree of complexity so an owner can experience what a top-end race boat is like to sail, and it delivers on that”, explains Russell Coutts. “Yet we also wanted it to be easy to own – you can race this boat in summer and if you wish put it away relatively easily in winter.”

“While the RC44 have some distinctive America's Cup features, they are light-displacement, high performance racers and designed to sail with eight person crew, or for a professional match racing format they could be sailed by just six crew. When we started to formulate this concept I wanted to create a boat that would be exciting to sail downwind and powerful in light winds because most of the harbour and lake sailing is staged at lighter wind venues. I also wanted a boat that could be sailed short-handed with a deck layout incorporating many non-standard adjustments.

The trim tab on the keel was an example of that thinking, to reduce keel area and yet still achieve good upwind performance and maneuverability. It adds to the complexity of the boat, but the racing enthusiast will enjoy exploring the different tab angles and the resulting benefits in performance.”

With a powerful sail plan, the RC44 is intended strictly for racing, either match racing or day sailing fleet races. The boat is targeted at the day sailor who wishes to sail a high performance one-design class. It has no comforts for cruising, and with a big open cockpit, a fairly narrow beam and the huge sail plan it produces a lot of excitement. The philosophy was to create something special for the racing sailor – a bit like owning a sports car versus a 4-wheel drive!

The boat features a removable stern scoop with a two-piece mast, both developed to provide for easy transportation, assembly and winter storage.

The class rules and the construction of the boat are being tightly controlled to protect the one-design concept and reduce development costs for participants. The Shetland Round Britain and Ireland double handed Yacht Race will set off from Plymouth on 6th June 2010 and see the double-handed crews sail 2000 nautical miles around the entire United Kingdom coastline.

We will be following the yacht, Fujifilm, crewed by Alex Bennett and Malcolm Dickinson. We have enjoyed following their training videos on Alex's YouTube Channel and reading Alex's sailing tweets on Twitter. "The race has been hosted by the Royal Western Yacht Club every four years since 1966. There are four compulsory stops of forty-eight hours at Kinsale, Barra, Lerwick and Lowestoft.
Following the success of the first two OSTARs, Herbert Hasler proposed to the Royal Western Yacht Club that there should be a two-handed race around the British Isles. The proposal was considered and the first Round Britain and Ireland race was held in 1966. The course, of about 2,000 miles (3,200 km), was be split into five legs separated by compulsory stop-overs of 48 hours each at Crosshaven in Ireland, Castle Bay, Barra in the Outer Hebrides, Lerwick in Shetland, and Harwich on the East Coast. It would circumnavigate Britain and Ireland and, with the exception of the Channel Islands and Rockall, all islands and rocks would be left to starboard.
The first race was a great success and the RB&I was established on a four year cycle (two years off the OSTAR cycle). Lowestoft replaced Harwich as the east coast port from the second race on. Thereafter the course remained the same until Kinsale replaced Crosshaven in 2006.
The RB&I grew rapidly to a multinational entry of many boat sizes and types. In 1982 the 85 starters included an 80 ft monohull, a 70 ft catamaran, several 60 and 65 ft trimarans, down to a 25 ft monohull, and represented over a dozen nationalities.
The following race was held in 1985, since 1986 was given over to the second TwoSTAR so it could run two years apart from the OSTAR. The four year cycle continued with races in 1989 and 1993, but reverted (following the last TwoSTAR in 1994) to its original schedule in 1998 and on to the latest race in 2010.

"Race Organiser for the RWYC Peter Taylor is thrilled by the number and quality of the entries: “We have crews from the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, France, Belgium and Italy, and of course from the UK including Alex Bennett from the West Country. We’ve had a surge of interest from Class 40 competitors, 10 in the last month alone, and this has resulted in the race filling up so early. These state of the art craft are the fastest 40 footers on the water by far and will make for some very, very exciting racing.”
Taylor explained that limiting the number of entrants to 60 optimized the efficiency of the administration for the race, and also took into account berthing arrangements. The race’s home port, Queen Anne’s Battery Marina, has already joined forces with Sutton Harbour Marina, from where Plymouth itself grew as a major port and city, to provide enough space for all the starters.
Douglas Irvine, Business Development Manager for Shetland Islands Council, which is sponsoring the race, said: “I’m delighted at this news. By the time the race reaches Lerwick the fleet will be spread out so we will have no trouble accommodating all of the crews, even with boats not involved with the race also berthed. Lerwick is the crossroads of the North Atlantic, and we can promise all racers and visitors alike an excellent time on the islands. Any interested visitors should look on www.shetlandmarinas.com for information.”
The Shetland Round Britain and Ireland race has had up to 80 entrants in previous years, but due to the grueling nature of the event not all of the boats made it around the full course. Some, due to lack of preparation, never even made it to the first of four compulsory stops or even the start. As Peter Taylor explained: “All of the yachts and multihulls this year are bigger, stronger and better equipped. We would expect no more than 10% of the entries to drop out which is a phenomenal achievement. However, it may be that some skippers pull out before the start and as the race is held only once every four years we are very keen to have a full starting line up, and therefore for the first time we have started to register reserve boats."
The fleet will be split into two sections for the start to avoid conflict between boats in Plymouth Sound, and spectators will find the best vantage points to watch the majestic start to a great adventure on Plymouth Hoe or at Jennycliff, to the east of the Sound." After three days of racing over the 6th to 9th May, the Wally yacht Magic Carpet Squared secured victory to lift the inaugural Nespresso Cup Trophy. The final day produced the best racing of the three-day event. The Groupama 3 trimaran has beaten Orange 2's previous record by an impressive two days, eight hours! Groupama 3 sets new Jules Verne record of 48 days 07 hours 44 minutes 52 seconds for complete circumnavigation. Fantastic!

He is the record holder for best in show victories at all breed shows in the UK, breaking the record in 2010 which had previously stood for 80 years!

Crufts is the biggest dog show in the world, this year there were over 22,000 dogs competing over 4 days. There were 187 different breeds competing. Dogs have to qualify for Crufts at Championship shows in the previous year to their Crufts entry, by winning 3rd, 2nd or 1st in a breed class. Breed classes are usually very difficult to win at Crufts because the show attracts so many entries. Dogs from all over the world compete at Crufts, and the European pet passport scheme has meant that even more dogs from Europe now attend Crufts on a regular basis.

We thought we'd post the highlights so more people can see this record breaking winner. This Vizsla is a fabulous dog. Not only is he beautiful, but he's a very fit and capable example of the breed, he looks as if he can work all day which is what his breed is designed to do. Congratulations Yogi!

"The only true singlehanded skiff available. With spinnaker, wings and trapeze the MPS is the best performing sinlehanded trapeze boat." Ovington Boats.

"The Musto Performance Skiff is a single-handed sailing skiff with a length of 4.55m. It features a trapeze, asymmetrical spinnaker, wings and low weight and achieves speeds of over twenty knots which makes it one of the fastest single-handed sailing boats.

It was designed for the 2000 Olympic Class trials in Quiberon by Joachim Harpprecht where it won every race in the single-handed dinghy competition. Since then, the class has grown mainly in the UK and Europe. The racing circuit had up to seven nations participating at regattas in 2004.
It is a demanding boat for experienced dinghy sailors. At the time of the design, the concept of a single-handed skiff was first met with scepticism by many observers, very similar to the initial reaction after the introduction of the 49er in 1996. Since then other single-handed skiff classes such as the RS700 have developed, bringing this kind of boat closer to mainstream dinghy sailing."

BMW ORACLE Racing Wins the 33rd America's Cup

The second race of the 33rd America's Cup was a terrific spectacle, full of suspense and exciting sailing.
Alinghi 5 picked up a penalty just before the starting gun, and looked as if they were already beaten, but then the Alinghi boat went to the right hand side of the race course and gained when the wind shifted to the right. Despite the disastrous start, Alinghi were leading for most of the upwind leg of the race, gaining 600 metres on the challengers. In this second race of the cup, experienced racing helmsman Loick Peyron taking control of Alinghi 5 instead of owner Ernesto Bertarelli. It was very close for most of the race with leaders Alinghi 5 trying to escape from the chasing BMW Oracle boat, all the while knowing that they would still have the penalty to complete. However after a disasterous tack at the top mark, BMW Oracle Racing then took the lead for the downwind leg and from then on the race was won. BMW Oracle Oracle rapidly gaining speed, reaching up to 33 knots!, and finishing 5 minutes 26 seconds ahead to take the 33rd America's Cup with a 2-0 victory.

33rd America's Cup Finally Starts

After being delayed from starting on Monday and Wednesday, due to unfavourable wind conditons, yesterday saw challenger US team BMW Oracle Racing's monster trimaran emphatically beating the defender Alinghi 5 catamaran in the first race of the 33rd America's Cup. It's the best of three races, and if everything goes in the same way that race 1 did, the ultimate victory could be decided tomorrow.

BMW Oracle is equipped with a revolutionary and incredibly powerful 68 metre long wing sail, and the trimaran was 1-3 knots faster on any point of sail, sailing higher upwind and lower downwind ultimately reaching speeds of up to 28 knots. BMW Oracle finished more than 3 kilometres ahead of Alinghi 5, who also incurred a right of way penalty. The finishing time margin was over 15 minutes.

Follow the 2nd race live from Valencia on the official America's Cup website tomorrow. The live video stream coverage and expert commentary is excellent.

"Spanish flagged 1876 came in to Puerto Limon in ninth place with Spain’s Pachi Rivero partnered by France’s Yves Parlier making a strong comeback in the last 36 hours. The pair lost more than 100 miles to Akena Verandas in recent days and fought back, gaining most of them back again.

Out of another squally, difficult evening peppered by torrential heavy tropical rain showers, Sam Davies and Sidney Gavignet brought Artemis across the finish line to complete their Transat Jacques Vabre in tenth place. Davies said she and Gavignet have no regrets at all about their strategic choice to go south, a choice which cost them any chance of a top result. She simply said they did not know the boat well enough to venture towards the northern routing. She said there were small things which cost them, making one small choice to tack south too late saw them lose miles to Akéna Vérandas. Otherwise it was the wearying battles with technical failures which ground them down and contributed to lost miles and small mistakes. Nevertheless the hugely talented duo sailed a solid race, showing great drive, spirit and good humour even when the odds had long since stacked up against them."

It has been a fascinating race to follow. The first week, especially, was absolutely gripping as the teams battled with the extreme weather. We congratulate all those teams that managed to complete the course.
