This series of videos from Motor Boat & Yachting Magazine is an interesting introduction to learning the basics of boating. The video instruction is given by John Mendez, qualified RYA tutor, who takes us through each aspect of the training at a very measured and easily accessible pace: perfect for beginners to follow. Part 1 covers the Safety Briefing;  life jackets, location of flares and basic introduction to using the vhf radio.

 Yachtmaster Training Part 2
Part 2 covers how to skipper a boat in and out of a port. It features step by step instructions of how to plot your course and use charts to help prepare a pilotage plan.

Yachtmaster Training Part 3
Part 3 covers basic boat handling concentrating on the various ways of picking up a mooring buoy, and basic instruction for turning the boat on the spot.

This is a very useful video series, perfect for amatuers, and we look forward to seeing future editions and learning more boating tips and skills.

"Alex Bennett and co skipper Malcolm Dickinson claimed 3rd place in the Shetland Round Britain and Ireland Race after a very close race to the finish. After 2000 miles just minutes separated the top 4 Class 40 boats who led the fleet into Plymouth."

These videos chart the experiences of Alex and Malcolm as they prepare and compete in the 2010 Shetland RBANDI race, and for anyone remotely interested in sailing, boating or yachts they are terrific viewing.

This year's race was really exciting to follow, and we will look forward to reading more about this race and Alex's sailing experiences in his autobiography that is due to be published later this year.

["Sun, warm weather and light wind are all just a memory for the 45 skippers participating to the 41st Solitaire du Figaro. The fleet crossed the high pressure ridge fairly early and is now preparing for the second night at sea, on their plate strong breeze, autumnal weather and rain. SN1 mark could be rounded soon
.The worries of crossing the high pressure ridge are only a memory for the skippers who left Gijon to Brest for the 385 long second leg. The fleet is well spread out over a 17 miles large area and the coming hours will be crucial to judge whether the best option was East, West or centre, that is to say the shortest one to the target. By now the more easterly route seems to have paid off but it will not be until the SN1 mark that the games will be revealed. All the boats are keeping impressive average speeds and the mix of good strategy, physical strength and good manoeuvring will make a difference.
“It could well be that the leaders will round the mark around 10 p.m.” said Race Director Jacques Caraës “It’s going to be a fairly exerting night and I advised all the skipper to wear their lifejackets, personal Epirb and a flash light at night. Just to remind them, you know.”
As far as the ranking is concerned the leader at the latest position report (at 16hrs) was Jèrémie Beyou (BPI) who has a little more than 3 miles advantage on second placed François Gabart (Skipper Macif 2010), third is the well experienced Kito de Pavant (Groupe Bel) while the winner of the first leg and leader of the general scoreboard Armel Le Cléa’ch (Brit Air) is fourth at 3,9 miles. Italian Pietro D’Alì seems to have found the right feeling with his Figaro II and is fifth at 4.5 miles behind Beyou."]

"On the final day of racing at the Nespresso Cup, the first exclusive regatta for Wally yachts, Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones’ Magic Carpet Squared sailed a great final race to secure the overall Nespresso Cup trophy.

The Nespresso Cup came to a stylish conclusion today in Portofino, Italy. After three days of racing over the 6th to 9th May, the Wally yacht Magic Carpet Squared secured victory to lift the inaugural Nespresso Cup Trophy. The final day produced the best racing of the three-day event. The anticipated duel between Magic Carpet Squared and J One, driven by owner Jean-Charles Decaux, became a reality as the two boats headed out to the racecourse on equal points. The Yacht Club Italiano managed to stage two windward/leeward races in 12-15 knots of breeze and it was the final race that proved to be the decider...." article copyright Julie Royer.

Watch the winner of Best in Show, Hungarian Vizsla Sh Ch/Aust Ch. Hungargunn Bear It'n Mind.
He is the record holder for best in show victories at all breed shows in the UK, breaking the record in 2010 which had previously stood for 80 years!


Crufts is the biggest dog show in the world, this year there were over 22,000 dogs competing over 4 days. There were 187 different breeds competing. Dogs have to qualify for Crufts at Championship shows in the previous year to their Crufts entry, by winning 3rd, 2nd or 1st in a breed class. Breed classes are usually very difficult to win at Crufts because the show attracts so many entries. Dogs from all over the world compete at Crufts, and the European pet passport scheme has meant that even more dogs from Europe now attend Crufts on a regular basis.
 
We thought we'd post the highlights so more people can see this record breaking winner. This Vizsla is a fabulous dog. Not only is he beautiful, but he's a very fit and capable example of the breed, he looks as if he can work all day which is what his breed is designed to do. Congratulations Yogi!

Latest Edition of DesTopNews International Sailing Report

DesTopNews is essential viewing for anyone interested in international sailing & yacht racing. This report always has excellent footage from sailing events (don't know how they manage to consistantly source such great video!) and all the big races from around the world. It's the best! Check it out.

Mike Perham - World Challenge

Mike Perham is a young 17 year old British sailor that is very close to completing his solo circumnavigation of the world, only 20 days left until he returns!

Mike is not only out there having the adventure of a lifetime, but he's also raising money for charity. We took this off his site: "Mike is hoping to raise £24,000 (£1 for each mile travelled) for charities with his trip through fundraising. The money will be donated to two charities close to Mike´s heart: Save the Children, and the Tall Ships Youth Trust, which gives deprived children in cities a chance to experience sailing." ©Sailmike2009

It's an amazing achievement for such a young sailor. Zac Sunderland and Mike Perham are an incredible inspiration to us all. They are really living the ultimate sailing dream. There are so few sailors that have successfully completed a solo circumnavigation, let alone done it as teenagers! It is really incredible.
